Anata ni Hana o Sasagemashou [Chapter 1]

Summarized by: Carolyne

The series starts off with our pretty protagonist, Seri, who is shocked and troubled seeing her whole house filled with flowers given to her as a birthday present. Having a vague idea as to who the sender is, she crumples the birthday card screaming ‘What’s that idiot trying to do!’ With that, Seri confronts Yuzuki asking if he’s toying with her. Yuzuki says how could she doubt his earnest feelings in wishing this older sister, whom he grew up with, a happy 22th birthday. Pissed, Seri tells him that they’re only 2 months apart so he should stop acting as if he’s much younger. Besides, those aren’t suitable as a present given by a childhood friend to his ‘sister’. Hearing that, he replies how about if it’s given by her fiancée. Unsatisfied, Seri scolds him for toying with her and adds that she hasn’t agreed to their arranged marriage. Yuzuki replies that their case was not so simple. As Seri’s family has wealth but no authority while his family is the opposite, both families want to merge their strong points through an arranged marriage. Seri argues that the agreement was made when they were 10 years old. However, Yuzuki sees this as something that’s rather common, and as long as their families benefit, their individual opinions don’t matter. Yuzuki’s parents appear and tell Seri that the Furumidou clan really needs her. Yuzuki’s mum goes on saying that the arrangement is perfect with the wealth of Seri’s family and Seri being of the same age as Yuzuki, and of course because she likes Seri as a person. Seri confesses that she would want to marry someone she loves. Yuzuki’s mum tells Seri that a marriage has to be planned and not carried out based on haphazard feelings. Seri’s father echoes behind agreeing that only through this way can there be a blissful marriage. Confused by their stand, Seri comments aren’t both their parents in love right now. Yuzuki’s mum replies that they fell in love only after marriage so Seri shouldn’t worry so much as love will surely develop. Seri straightforwardly rejects their proposal and admits that she can’t get along with the arrogant and sarcastic Yuzuki. He looks as if he doesn’t care when everyone else is troubled over an issue concerning him. Yuzuki defends himself saying that she is the only one making the most fuss right now. Yuzuki questions his parents if they really want such a stubborn and unrefined daughter-in-law but his mum says that they will accept only Seri. Not seeming to have an opinion of his own, Seri tells him that it is this attitude of his that she hates. Their parents see the tiff as a lovers’ quarrel and starts to discuss the marriage plans for Yuzuki and Seri, forgetting all that Seri had said earlier.

Unable to convince both families, Seri was made to go with the flow. In order to plan for their wedding, Yuzuki brought Seri to the main house of Furumidou. He explains that because of his studies, his family rented an apartment in the city. However, they will be shifting back in spring and she will be staying here too after they marry. Seri, still opposing the marriage, rejects the idea. Yuzuki comments that she hasn’t learnt her lesson, still trying to fight a losing battle against their parents. He can’t believe that she’s not tired from protesting for 12 years. Seri retorts that doing something against her own wishes is even more tiring. Before she makes her decision, she will try all ways to delay the marriage ceremony. Yuzuki makes fun of her saying that she’s already made to visit the main house. Seri observes that the place is rather huge though old, and she gets the feeling that there’s something lurking around. Teasing her, Yuzuki says ‘Seri, behind you!’ Freaking out, Seri jumps into Yuzuki but realized that he was just making fun of her. Yuzuki laughs and remarks that she hasn’t changed, always acting obstinate but is timid in nature. Seri thinks isn’t he the same, having a smile that hasn’t changed since young. Yuzuki tells Seri to wait in a room, which starts to give her the chills. While waiting, Seri starts to hear whispers that were discussing stuff about her. She wonders if there’re people heading towards the room. Upon hearing someone say that she looks like she’s able to give birth to many children, Seri opens the door and demand that they say it in her face and not talk behind her back. However, Seri was shocked to see no one behind the door. The whispers continued and the bowl started shaking. Starting to feel scared while wondering what’s happening, the door suddenly slammed shut on its own. Terrified, Seri ran out of the room but door after door, they were closing on their own as if trying to force her to a specific place. Seeing that there was only one door left ajar, she runs through it only to be shut into a room that looks like a warehouse. Trembling and horrified, she bangs against the door and calls for someone to let her out. A voice threatens to not let Seri out forever unless she agrees to marry into the Furumidou family. As Seri starts to break down from the pestering chants, Yuzuki barges in and orders ‘them’ to stop. He scolds ‘them’ for harassing Seri when he warned them not to. Glad to see that Yuzuki came to her rescue, Seri plunges into his arms whilst still trembling from the encounter. Angry to see Seri being frightened like that, he questions where’s ‘their’ conscience, using people’s weaknesses to force them to submit. A spirit dressed in kimono appears and asks Yuzuki for forgiveness as everyone’s doing this out of concern. Yuzuki calls him Harumi-sama. Seri while wondering who he is, is still unable to accept whatever is going on around her. Harumi sensing that Seri is in a state of confusion and fear, tells her not to be scared as they are all Yuzuki’s ancestors. They are all males of the Furumidou family who passed away in their younger years and Harumi is the first head of the house. Yuzuki questions what were they trying to do appearing in front of Seri. Yuzuki asks if she recalls that his father and grandfather married into the family. He continues explaining that few males are born in the Furumidou family and many die when they’re still young. Even his uncle died when he was a baby due to a sickness and many others died from getting into accidents. Seri probes Yuzuki for the reason but he doesn’t know why either, it could be some form of curse or retribution. Harumi explains that in order to end this fate, the spirits remain in existence to protect the males of the family. However, their powers are limited hence they are still unable to break this chain. This time, they will do their very best to protect Yuzuki who is the only male born after 3 generations of no males. Harumi asks for Seri’s forgiveness for the spirits who have become impatient from the waiting. Seri wonders if Yuzuki is gonna suffer the same fate as well. The reason for moving to the city was so that he won’t be alone and his whole family could protect him. And they want him to marry early so as to continue the lineage while he’s still alive. Yuzuki knows that his parents love him and that is precisely why he’s working to continue the family’s lineage. Seri realized that Yuzuki had a mind of his own and had properly thought through the decision to marry. However, her decision will not change as she doesn’t want to be forced into a marriage. Yuzuki knows that and he hopes that just like him, her decision to marry him is based on her own accord. He adds that she will most probably give up soon though. Harumi also pleads for Seri to marry into the family. Yuzuki shields her and warns them that she has nothing to do with the family as long as they aren’t married. Harumi comments that the current head has a rather bad temper and tells Seri that they await her good news and bids them farewell. Seri got a fright when the spirits disappeared. While holding her hand, Yuzuki assures her that they won’t harm her. Seri recalls that they used to hold hands like this when they were kids. She concluded that Yuzuki must have agreed to their parents’ decision as it would be troublesome to defy or to find another candidate. Yuzuki doesn’t deny that and Seri questions if it is really alright to choose her. They have been fighting ever since they were kids and she finds it unimaginable that they could kiss let alone give birth to children… Before Seri could finish, Yuzuki pulls her close and tells her that he is able to as the thought of marrying her is always on his mind. With that, he gives her a deep kiss causing Seri to fluster. Feeling embarrassed, she pushes him away and Yuzuki tells her not to belittle his 12-year determination in marrying her. Regardless of her character, the only person he’s gonna marry is her. Seri was taken aback by the sudden confession and she wonders if she should be feeling angry instead. Harumi appears and replies that Yuzuki is such an unromantic guy. Seri was traumatized by his sudden appearance but Harumi defends that they didn’t intend for her to see them. It seems that Seri’s fate is linked to the Furumidou family. Seri has an intuition that she will be tied firmly to this marriage arrangement. However, this is only the beginning… [TO BE CONTINUED]
