Sukitte Ii na yo [Chapter 20]

Summarized by: Carolyne

Bebe©Xiu: I thought this is very interesting and cute image...which can be interpreted in some way how their relationship at this stage.

Continuing from where the previous chapter left off, Kai was consoling Mei who cried suddenly. Asking if something had happened, Kai tells Mei that he’d noticed her acting strangely lately. Mei insists that nothing happened though Kai doesn’t accept that after seeing the expression on her face. He advices her to not always try to solve everything herself, she should depend on others once in a while. Especially when there’s a busybody (like him) who approaches her asking, ‘what’s wrong?’ After hearing Mei’s story, Kai flares up over Megumi’s antics since he’s the only one who has suspicions about her ever since the Land incident. (The one when she lied to Kai that she was a fan of Land to get close to him when in fact she disliked it.) He wonders how Megumi feels about all this, is it really enjoyable lying not just to others but also to herself. While chatting with Aiko and Asami, Megumi receives a mail from her mum. Her mum wrote that she’d bought the magazine in which Megumi had appeared in and that without doubt, she’s the cutest compared to the other models. She ends the message requesting Megumi to contact her once in a while. Looking at the message with downcast eyes, she puts away her phone without replying her mum. Asami shows concern for Megumi asking whether that was a notification for a job. Megumi says that it is but it isn’t important and diverts their attention by inviting Aiko and Asami to attend a movie preview with her. Aiko however, had noticed something strange happening across her. She saw Mei leaving the class with Kai when he called out to her while Yamato with a troubled look, watched her leave without breathing a word. Seeing this, Aiko senses something amiss. Outside, Mei apologies to Kai for taking up his free time to accompany her and tells him that he doesn’t need to do this as she’s used to being alone. Kai tells her that he wouldn’t do something that he feels is troublesome and besides, her mind will wander off if she’s alone. He wants to help her in any way possible and tells her to not take it to heart. Mei blushes while thinking that no one has consoled her this way before. She used to live in her own world, paying attention only to the direction she was headed. However, Yamato appeared and encouraged her to not just look straight but to look around as well. Telling her that his eyes can see much more and that she actually is interested too, he pulls her into his world while vowing that he’ll protect her. As her vision gets wider and brighter, she finally sees the people around her. She then wonders if it’s okay for her to smile and walk alongside everyone else. Back to reality, Mei tears as she went through those memories while thanking Kai. Kai cheers Mei up by helping her to think positively and also reassure her that even if her important friends have left her, he swears that he will never let her be alone. Mei felt that Kai words amidst the jokes had saved her.

A new morning at school, Mei plucks up her courage to greet Aiko who walked past her desk. Aiko teases her saying that it’s rare for her to take the initiative. After some contemplation, AIko asks Mei whether she’d made up with Yamato already. When Mei gave a confused expression, Aiko elaborates that they haven’t been together much lately causing her to conclude that they must have had a fight or something. Mei felt a little touched when she realized that Aiko had been taking notice of her. She then asks Aiko whether they could be considered as friends. After some blushing and frenzy, Aiko says that they won’t be conversing like they did if they aren’t friends. Mei smiles and says thank you while resolving that waiting will get her nowhere. Mei approaches Yamato asking if it’s okay to go home together. When Yamato replies that he has to stay for a meeting, Mei tells him that because she wants to go home with him, she’ll wait for him. Yamato, glad that their relationship is back to normal, says okay and also that Mei’s current expression caused his heart to beat rapidly. After which, Megumi apologizes to Mei for having caused a minor misunderstanding. Though it seemed that Mei has been by herself lately, Megumi’s glad that Mei seems to be fine being alone. While waiting for Mei’s reply, Megumi had a very smug expression on her face. However, Mei’s confident reply that she’s feeling alright threw Megumi aback. Kai then spots Megumi walking briskly along the hallway and calls out to her. He questions Megumi menacingly with regards to her treating Mei meanly. Megumi insists that she hasn’t done anything to Mei but it is Mei instead who is overly paranoid. Kai tells her that Mei was hurt by what she had said. Megumi then counters saying that what if she said that she was wounded. She accuses Mei of making use of Kai, an outsider, and talking behind her back. She could instead say that she’s the one being treated meanly by them. Megumi threatens Kai that she could notify the teachers. When Kai gets pissed and comments that she has a really terrible personality, Megumi enters her sparkling mode saying that it’s not terrible and that she was just speaking the truth. She tries to tempt Kai again into working together with her but Kai gave her a thumbs-down in rejection saying that his pure and white heart would become black if he’s together with her. Displeased and in order to get back at him, Megumi starts wailing that Kai has done something awful to her. Hearing her cries, two male teachers come running towards them and pulls Kai away, of course accusing him of all the bad deeds without hearing his explanation. A few of Megumi’s friends then come running towards her out of concern after hearing her cries. After telling them that she wants to go out and have some fun since she had been feeling irritated the whole day, her friends immediately decided on karaoke. After all the enjoyment, Megumi pays for the expenses of the whole gang. They thank her and lavish envies and praises about how she’s an affluent and atypical high school student. It’s nightfall by the time Kai was released by the teachers after lecturing him. Kai still feels indignant that Megumi had caused him to go through all this trouble even though he’s not the bad one. Reaching into his pocket, he felt something crumbled inside. Opening the crumbled envelope, he realized that it’s the pair of tickets given to him by evil Megumi. He wonders if he should throw it away. After some contemplation, he thinks that if he uses it…

[[To Be Continued]]

Translator's Commentary: I keep forgetting that Kai is really a nice and good boy behind that façade of his. That’s why he can say such nice and sweet things that don’t coincide with his image to console Mei. And I really can’t stand Megumi acting cute and innocent with bitchy and mean things coming out from her mouth. Hope that Mei can keep up the good work standing up against Megumi!
Next up, will Kai make his move on Mei using those tickets? And how much longer can Megumi keep up with her pretense?

@carolyne, what fascinated me about the cover image, is the way i see Yamato is being wrapped by Mei and she is trying to hold on to him but then u got Kai is trying to losen the string she held on to....that just my theory.

I agree. I feel that Mei is trying to hold on to Yamato, but Kai is slowly drawing her away.

First things first, thank you Carolyne for translating this. If I had to wait for the scan releases I don’t think my heart could handle it :).

Secondly, I rarely write here but in the past couple chapters I have become annoyed. No, not with the characters but with the commenter’s. Remember I’m not angry but I think something should be pointed out. I am sick of the constant Yamato bashing, why? Because if you have read the manga from chapter 1 to this point it should be considerably uncalled for. If you remember correctly Mei has always been the sulky insecure one while Yamato has always been the one pushing her to be more social, to try new things and constantly reassuring her. He’s always been the one holding the relationship together. So new girl who he does not know is evil (because lack of communication, on BOTH sides) tells him something and yeah he makes a mistake and doesn’t ask Mei about it…that was his mistake. In real life (I know, I know you shouldn’t do REAL life comparison but I think you all need it) people make these mistakes in relationships all the time especially when there is not good communication. In the whole manga up until now who was the one in the relationship that had a hard time communicating about uncomfortable subjects? Mei. That’s right this ONE time it’s the both of them but in the past majority of the time it was Mei. Now all of a sudden Yamato who has so far been her awesome boyfriend is a dick and should be replaced with a character we hardly know. Also something I think you’re not seeing clearly because you’re in *squee* manga-land (don’t worry I am too most of the time) is that Kai is already showing he has some not-so-perfect qualities either. He is trying to steal Mei, maybe in a nicer way than Megumi but still trying to steal Mei. Imagine if he was a girl for a second that was acting sweet towards Yamato for a while and then thinking of asking him on a date knowing he was with Mei. Yeah that’s right you guys would throw a shit-fit, so would I. In real life if another girl was asking your boyfriend out and hanging around him you would be pissed off, your pissed off at Megumi for trying to steal Yamato but not pissed off at Kai for trying to steal Mei? Is that a double-standard I smell?

i know this is a bit to inocent... but f he gives the tickets to mei 4 her to go with yamat0???

I think the cover picture's meaning goes along the lines of:
Yamato and Mei have been slowly moving away from eachother since the last few chapters, thus the distance between them, as apposed to Kai and Mei's distance. Since Kei and Mei have been talking and interacting a lot more, he's so much closer to her than Yamato is.
Mei is still holding on to their relationships with eachother, which is why she's holding the connection of the ribbons close to her.
The way the ribbon is wrapped around Yamato's neck also signifies the fact that Mei basically has him wrapped around her finger, although she probably would never act upon it.

Well, that's how I saw it.xD

@Amy, I think we all have double standard at some point when given an opinions. At this point I think the fans are just disliking Yamato because of how he handle the situation...and they see Kai as better opponent the way the author decribed his character so far. Although everyone sees that Kai has feelings for Mei but she only see him as a good friend who supported her and yes it is the same way wit Megumi trying to steal Yamato, but her character is so fake and dishonest, so why should they support her?

And if this were to be in real life situation (which I have similary experiennced ) Since I know how Yamato popularity with girls and all, all my friends would tell me to go with Kai. This is how people see things...we only see what's on the outside not inside the person feelings.

@Anonymous, my theory is not as descriptive as urs,but exactly what u put out is so true...although I think at this point Yamato is being wrapped up by Mei because she caused his heart to beat rapidly in this chapter..hehe so cute there!

I'll have chapter 21 up tommorow!

Megumi is such a bitch . Sorry for my english I speak french

K can you please tell me when it is the pics and actually the words put together i love this manga

Wow...mei may be really insecure but damn, she's a good girl and she's trying at least. I also think Yamato needs to apalogize. He never asked her her side of the story, never talked to her, just believed that megumi bitch and accussed.
No matter how much of a knight in shining armor he is, he had no right just to accuse her like that. A real lover/man/boyfriend would have went "excuse me but i'll like to hear this from my girlfriend first especially since YOURE THE ONLY ONE WHO "HEARD" THEM, THANKS"

Honestly I really love Kai. Not only is he Mei's only true friend he is completely worthy of being her soul mate. I wish she would end up with him.
