Chapter 1
The series starts with a shot of a school, a tennis match being played and students preparing to go home. Leaning in the classroom window, a girl in a sports uniform asks her friend, Ootaka Mio, to check around her desk for a supporter (some sort of knee brace, it seems) like the one she's holding. (Their other friend, Yuni, seems a bit miffed that she automatically asked Mio to do it.) She agrees and goes over to search “Shii-chan's” desk. Not finding it in the desk, she decides to check underneath. In the background, some of the other students are having a conversation that seems to boil down to one of the girls comparing her level of attractiveness to another (I can't see most of it well enough to read, but it doesn't seem relevant to the plot). One of them says she's hungry, so they plan to go out to eat. One of the girls (Hoshikawa, if I'm reading her name correctly) comes over to invite a boy still sitting at his desk, Taki-kun. He doesn't even look up from the log book he's working in, and she calls out his name again. One of the boys with her tells Taki not to ignore people when they're talking to him, but both of them seem to think she's wasting her time even trying to get his attention. Smiling brightly, she asks again, “Are you going?” He finally looks up, and, with a strange look, asks her what girls do these days to stay in shape. She's understandably confused, and stammers that they have physical education together, right? Ah, that's right... She asks him again, “Putting that aside, are you coming with us?” He ignores her again and turns to Mio, who is still crouched under the desk, and asks her what she does to stay in shape. “Te-, tennis...” she answers, as the rest of the people standing around look on in shock. At that, Hoshikawa storms off, as Mio wonders what on earth just happened and if he was ignoring that girl on purpose. Taki finally finishes what he was doing and closes the class log book he was working on, and looks up, asking, “Where did you say you were going?” After a moment, he realizes that she's gone, and seems surprised. Mio marvels at his slow reaction time, and tells him that she's long gone. He tells her, “Ah, I see,” and simply leaves the classroom. Thinking that Taki-kun seems rather strange, Mio rejoins her friends and gives Shii-chan the supporter she asked for. Shii-chan notes that she feels a little sorry for Hoshikawa-san. Mio says that it seems like a waste to ignore an invitation from a cute girl like that, and Yuni seems angry at his conceit (I can't clearly read what she's saying). Shii-chan concludes that he's probably just a weird guy, then asks Yuni if she's going to her part-time job today. She says that she is, and they all part ways.
Mio is on her way home, walking into the train station and still thinking about the scene Taki-kun created earlier. She wonders if he was showing off or trying to dampen that girl's interest in him, or something else... She stops in her tracks as she sees Taki-kun himself on the platform, looking up at the sky. In the background, there's an announcement that the train will be departing, so please stay behind the yellow line. Seeing how intently he's staring, Mio also looks up, wondering if there's something there. She gets a bit dizzy, and a man rushing to make the train comes running up behind them. He bumps into Taki, who loses his balance and begins to fall in front of the approaching train. Mio rushes over and pulls him such that they both fall back onto the platform, then yells at him to be more careful. If he'd been a little closer to that train, she would have been forced to witness a traumatic event! He turns and stares at her blankly, not answering, and Mio waves her hand at him, asking him if he's all right. She wonders if he still suffered a head injury. Finally, he responds, “Ah...” and stands up, looking back towards the sky. “It's disappearing.” Huh? The airplane's vapor trail he was watching. Since it will be gone soon, they'll have nice weather tomorrow. Mio asks him how he knows that, and he gives her a lengthy explanation about how one can use the vapor trails to predict the weather. If it disappears quickly, the upper atmosphere is dry and the weather should be clear. If it lingers, the upper atmosphere is moist, so... Mio interrupts and says, “The weather will be bad!?” Taki smiles back at her and tells her that's right. Excited, Mio tells him that was really interesting. She never knew that – that's awesome, Taki-kun! Smiling, she looks back up at the sky, and then notices that he's looking at her. He starts to laugh, and tells her, “You're pretty strange, Ootaka-san. Up until now, I figured you were just a normal person.” She tells him that she's normal – he's clearly the strange one! Him? He's normal. (Liar, she thinks.) She sees him smiling at the sky again, and he hands her the bag she dropped when she pulled him away from the train. It's funny – a strange person called her strange, and it didn't bother her at all. Rather than that, she enjoyed talking with Taki-kun.
The next morning, Mio is walking to school, smiling as she notices that the weather is, in fact, clear. Someone behind her asks, “Are you looking for something?” and she turns around and sees Taki-kun. She tells him good morning and explains that she's been looking carefully, but can't find any airplanes. Is she that desperate to find one? When she learns about interesting phenomena like that, she can't wait to check it out for herself. Looking at the sky, Mio wanders a bit into the street. Some other students try to yell from across the street to look out, and Taki notices that Mio is in danger of being hit by a car. He pulls her back onto the sidewalk and, smiling, tells her, “I also don't like witnessing trauma.” Mio's friends are shocked, seeing him pull her towards himself. In the classroom, they grill her over what happened. That was quite a surprise - since when has this been going on!? She tells them that it's nothing – nothing is going on! Shii-chan presses the issue: Is it really nothing? Yuni tells Mio that she thought they were kissing in the middle of the street. It was nothing like that! She didn't see that car coming, so he pulled her out of the street. Shii-chan points out that Taki-kun has never been one to notice details like that, and Yuni wonders if that means Mio is special. It's probably because of yesterday – Mio rescued him from being hit by a train, so he was probably just returning the favor. (The teacher comes in and tells them to get in their seats.) Mio puts her head on her desk, thinking that she was also surprised. Even though they only talked a little, it turned out like this... Mio blushes a little as she looks at him, thinking that he seems to have some hidden strength... well, he is a boy.
Mio can't seem to stop thinking about what Yuni said – that she thought Mio and Taki-kun were kissing in the middle of the street – and goes to splash water on her hot face. She's approached by a girl (whose name I could never quite make out) who notes that Mio and Taki-kun seem to be on good terms; can Mio tell her his [email] address? Mio shakes her head, saying that they aren't really friends – she doesn't even know his address. Oh, really? She heard that Mio was hanging out with him yesterday. They weren't? Mio doesn't really answer, and asks the other girl why she wants to know. It just seemed like a nice atmosphere between them, so she was a little interested (even if it was only a rumor). On her way down the hall, Mio runs into Taki-kun, who notices her and says, “Ah, Ootaka-san.” From behind her, we see the other girl asking her to wait a moment, and so she frantically pushes her back into the washroom. She asks Mio what's wrong; does she not feel well? It's not that... But, Mio thinks, right after she said that she and Taki weren't friends, she started to feel like she was lying. It's true that she doesn't know his address, but would it be OK if she asked him for it? Probably, but... Why is this shaking her up? The other girl remembers something and says, “Ah, that's right, I also wanted to ask for Shimisu-san's email address.” Shii-chan...? She's been talking with Shimisu-san recently, and she has a nice air about her. She seems pretty interesting. Mio wonders why this seems to be causing the same tension as before, and asks if that means that Taki-kun and Shii-chan seem interesting, so she wants to make friends with them? Right, the other girl responds. Why, would there be some other reason? No, she'll tell Shii-chan she asked. The other girl tells her to please take care of it, and waves good-bye. Mio lets out a sigh, and then we see her at home later that night, resting her head on her desk. She thinks that this is no time to worry about this, and presumably gets back to her homework.
On the way to school the next day, Shii-chan and Yuni are at a vending machine buying juice, and Shii-chan is surprised to find she got back too much change. Mio sees them and they greet each other, and Yuni tells her about Shii-chan's extra change. Somebody forgot to take theirs before. She got back 110 yen, so can Yuni borrow 80? 80 yen of that was Shii-chan's change... Hearing their discussion, Mio covers her ears and asks them to stop talking about math. Speaking of which, did Mio finish the homework? She was done for after five pages; there were two Mio just couldn't get. They continue to discuss it on the way into the classroom. The teacher declares that they'll be going over the problems from the homework for practice, so would the three people in the back (including Mio) come to the front to work them? Mio is in a bit of a daze as she goes up to the chalkboard. She attacked the problems with all her might last night; if she can just remember... How did she do it before? As she tries desperately to recall the solution, the other two finish and return to their seats. Embarrassed, Mio turns back to the chalkboard. Why of all days was she called on today? If she could just copy her work from before... Nervously, she asks the teacher if she could please take a look at the textbook. He only taunts her - but the work she turned in was completed, wasn't it? Does she really need the textbook? Mio turns back to the board, thinking that it can't be helped. Even she makes a mistake, she'll just have to try to do this. She struggles and leans against the board, and the teacher says, “Ootaka, Sensei is waiting patiently...” But it's not just him; the rest of the class is also waiting, so please hurry and finish. She's causing a problem for everyone. Right, do it quickly... But this is bad, she doesn't remember it well... As Shii-chan, growing angry, is about to get up and defend Mio, she sees Taki-kun calmly walk up to the board and finish the problem. Both Mio and the teacher watch in shock, and Taki tells Mio to go back to her seat. The teacher yells at Taki that it was Ootaka's problem – it's pointless if Taki does it! Is that so? But, Taki answers, forcing Ootaka to solve it didn't seem to take her feelings into account... The teacher gets angry and asks him what was that? Or, rather - Taki turns to him with a scowl – they've already wasted fifteen minutes of class time. Did he want to turn this into a fifty-five minute study period? That's enough, the teacher yells. They'll start class, and Ootaka needs to redo the last two pages and turn them in by the end of the day.
As Taki returns to his seat, Mio thinks that he seemed really bothered by that. Should she apologize? Taki turns and smiles brightly, and Mio realizes that he was playing around, like a kid. Later, she goes to apologize and thank him for earlier, and he just smiles gently. Then, another guy from the class comes and puts his arm around him, telling him how cool that was. Shii-chan and Yuni also come up and thank him for helping Mio. Watching them, Mio thinks that even though she was relieved that he wasn't really annoyed with her, her breath seemed to catch. After school, we see Mio working on the mathematics homework she still had to turn in. Yuni and Shii-chan apologize that they have to go to work and club activities, respectively, even though they're only halfway through Mio's work. Mio says it's fine – she'll figure it out – and thanks them for helping her to that point. Alone in the room, she puts her pencil down, exhausted, and looks out the window. Her eyes widen, and she sees an airplane going past. The excitement was like a bolt to her chest – the vapor trail didn't dissipate, that pure, white line. On the way to school the next day, Yuni and Shii-chan ask Mio if she got her work in on time. (She did.) Aside from that, Shii-chan points out that it's nice out today. Why did Mio bring an umbrella? As Mio starts to explain, she sees Taki-kun coming up the path. Their eyes meet and she blushes. A feeling that she hasn't felt before... he also brought an umbrella to school today. Noticing this, they both start to laugh. First year of high school: Mid-August weather.
Chapter 2
Chapter two begins with Mio looking at a picture of a vapor trail on her cell phone, and thinking that, somehow, she ended up getting Taki-kun's email address. A short flashback shows Taki-kun showing her the picture he took and explaining that all of the vapor trails he saw yesterday disappeared. Mio compliments the picture, thinking that she should start taking them, too. Taki tells her that he'll send that one to her. Thinking, “I did it!!” Mio gazes at the picture he sent her. Suddenly, Yuni comes up behind Mio and asks her what she's mewling at. Shii-chan also appears, asking if it's the picture that Taki sent her. Shii-chan apologizes for being late, and Yuni notes that it's been a while since the three of them have been able to hang out. Shii-chan explains that it's because it's unusual for both her club activities and Yuni's job to be off on the same day. Mio looks back at the crowd, thinking that the scenery seems to shine more than usual. Everyone seems to become more amiable; thinking that there's someone she likes, makes everything seem more fun. As Yuni and Shii-chan discuss what they should do, Mio notices someone in the crowd. Following Mio's line of sight, the other two see that she's staring at someone who looks like Taki. He turns his head, and all three of them simultaneously realize that it's a different person. Mio looks rather disappointed, and Yuni asks her what she and Taki-kun email each other about. Looking at Mio's phone, Shii-chan is confused – it's just a picture of a street? Yuni asks Mio if she ever sends him messages like, “Good night,” and things like that, and Mio scrunches up her face. It's not like she's his girlfriend, so she couldn't do something like that. Yuni takes Mio's phone, saying that's fine – she'll do it now. Noting that it's Saturday, and it's morning, she types a message that says, “Good morning,” (plus a cat face emoticon) and hands the phone back to Mio. Shii-chan notes that it might be better to leave it alone, and Mio looks down at the phone. That might be true... and don't address it to the wrong person! But, Mio thinks, she does want to become friends with him, so she sends the message. Yuni wonders if Taki will send a reply, and they wait. Shii-chan says that, well, for now they can see if he sends a return greeting. Forty minutes pass, and no response. Shii-chan suggests that Taki-kun is probably sleeping late, since it's Saturday, and Mio agrees. Yuni decides they should go shopping, and they move along. No response came.
On her way to school the following day, Mio worries that Taki-kun was taken aback by her sudden familiarity. She sees him at the shoe lockers, and she's afraid to make eye contact. She tries to say good morning to him, and he ignores her. After a moment, though, he turns around and says, “Ah, Ootaka-san? You changed your hair, so I didn't recognize you.” He smiles, and Mio blushes as she tries to ask him about the email. On Saturday, she sort of arbitrarily sent him an email... Ah, that. He explains that it was already past midday when he saw it, so he thought it was too late to respond. Mio apologizes, and Taki goes on to say that, had he seen it in the morning, he would have responded. As they go on to class, Mio ponders Taki-kun's system. So, if she understands correctly, it's morning, and if she sent the email now he'd reply. Is she following his method right? At home that night, she's still thinking about it. It was only because his requirements for answering weren't met, right? Morning - “good morning” - he responds. Midday - “good morning” - he doesn't respond. For the time being, she's satisfied with that. Flipping through the channels, she sees something on television and gets excited. Mio picks up her phone and decides to send Taki an email asking if it's a good time to talk. She nervously awaits an answer, wondering if it's OK if the email is not an image, then gets a reply that simply says, “Yes.” She informs him that there's a program on airplane vapor trails on TV right now. He replies, “Heh...” Mio seems happy that she seems to have met his requirements for a response. Thinking about Saturday, she sends him a message about how she saw a guy that looked like him on Saturday, but she didn't say anything. Leaning against the couch, Mio thinks that if that guy hadn't turned around when he did, she would have called out to him. Taki responds that, if it was Saturday, he was there. Mio cries out in surprise, and asks him what he was doing there. He went out to get textbooks for someone he knows. Mio seems a little disappointed that she saw a different person, even though Taki-kun was also there. Taki asks Mio what she was doing on Saturday, and... Mio's phone dies on her before she can answer. Mio sends an email saying that she was shopping with Shii-chan and Yuni, but it's twenty minutes before she can regain her connection. Her mother yells to her that the bath is ready, and Mio sends a note apologizing for her slow reply. She'll see him in the morning; good night. Mio goes off to the bath, not expecting a reply, and is surprised when her phone rings. Taki responded, “Good night.” Blushing, Mio sinks into the bath, thinking that she keeps replaying that message in her mind in Taki-kun's voice: “Good night.”
The next day at school, they're working on computers and Mio keeps looking over to Taki-kun. Their eyes meet, and she looks away to talk about the assignment. She glances back to see that Taki is still looking at her, and so she tries smiling at him. He doesn't react at all to her awkward smile, and she becomes frustrated. She thinks that it's getting embarrassing; lately, she has no idea how to act around Taki-kun, and she doesn't get a sense that he's embarrassed at all. She wonders what level of friendship they're on. As Mio ponders this, Yuni and Shii-chan call to her to hurry (I can't read it clearly, but I see “A lunch” in there, so they seem to be rushing to get a certain lunch plate before it sells out). As they run, they spot a girl in an unfamiliar uniform wandering the halls. Watching her, Mio suddenly stops, and a guy rushing for the cafeteria behind her hits his chin on her head. She apologizes, and he yells at her, “Don't suddenly stop walking, Ootaka!” He goes on, and the mystery girl looks back at Mio. Mio asks her what's wrong – is she looking for the office? She turns around, and Mio thinks that she's beautiful. “Ootaka,” she says, “Ootaka... Mio?” Mio asks how she knows her name, and the girl looks at Mio up and down, smirking. She tells Mio not to mind her – she's not lost, she's just looking around the school. Mio says, “I see...” and the girl starts to walk away, then turns back to Mio. Does Mio send all her acquaintances “good morning” emails? It's annoying, doesn't she think? As Mio is wondering how she knows about that, Shii-chan runs back and tells Mio that the A lunch sold out. What will she do? Seeing that Mio was still gaping at that mystery girl, Shii-chan asks if Mio knows her. No, but somehow that girl knows her name. Back in class, Shii-chan says something about Marui-kun (the guy who ran into Mio), and Mio continues to think about the girl from earlier. What was that about annoying emails? Annoying... She didn't send something like that to anyone but Taki-kun, so maybe she should restrain herself from sending emails to him. As the teacher brings the class to an end, he says that it's nearly the end of the term, so make sure they remember [the lesson], especially... Ootaka and Marui. (Mio tuned out the lesson thinking about her email, while Marui seems to have been asleep.) With a cruel smile, he tells them that if they get one more failing grade, what will become of their fun winter vacation. Are they prepared?
After classes end, we see Mio and Marui telling the girl on duty not to erase the board yet. They'll do it for her later! As they frantically copy down the lesson from earlier, Marui asks Mio what she got on the midterm exam. A 25, she says. What did he get? After a pause he tells her that he got... an 8. With an uncomfortable laugh, Mio asks him if his head is OK. Same as always, he answers. Looking in on them, Shii-chan says to Yuni and Taki, “So there's the desperate pair who failed the last exam, huh?” Marui asks Mio if she understands the next problem, and she says she doesn't. Seeming to get a bit jealous, Taki-kun goes into the classroom. Jokingly, Marui wishes that the teacher was there so they could ask him to teach them. Mio goes along with him, calling out, “Sensei, we miss you!” and laughing that she hopes he's feeling well. As she looks back to her notes, she sees Taki-kun right in front of her. Surprised, she jumps back, blushing. Marui, on the other hand, asks him what's up. Will he help them with this? So, Taki does start helping Marui with the problem they were trying to figure out, and Mio watches him write on the chalkboard. As she watches, she realizes that he's switching hands as he writes. She asks him if he's left-handed, and he answers that he's ambidextrous. Mio gets a little excited, saying that must be nice. A while ago, she injured the middle finger on her right hand, so she got some practice writing with the left. She picks up some chalk and tries to demonstrate, but gets a little embarrassed when she can't do it well. Marui tells her that's all right, they should focus on their work right now, and she turns sheepishly away from the board. As she does, she notices Taki-kun giving her a really affectionate look. Or was he laughing at her? He's kind of a mysterious guy, and she usually can't understand him. As he continues to help them with their problems, Mio wonders why that is. But whether she's right or wrong, or if she's reading too much into things, it feels like she and Taki-kun are gradually getting closer.
At home that night, Mio is texting with Shii-chan. She tells her that she was glad Taki-kun was there to teach them today. Mio's mother asks her to bring the box of tissues on the other side of the room (she seems to be cooking and can't move away from what she's doing). Mio puts down her phone and brings her mother the tissues. She returns to her phone, and sends a follow-up message, saying that it would be nice if Taki-kun could keep helping her until the end of the term. (She ends the message with a smiley and a large number of hearts.) Mio lays back, thinking that if Taki-kun helped her, she would definitely pass the exam. Her phone suddenly beeps, and she sees she has a message from Taki-kun. She freaks out, wondering what it's about, and sees that it only says, “All right.” Huh? What is? Looking more carefully, she realizes that it's a response to the email she meant to send to Shii-chan, saying how she wished he would keep helping her. She sent that message to him! On her way to school that day, Mio thinks that the email she sent was like a sample of the sort of annoying messages she had vowed not to send him yesterday. And then, she ended up sending him one that very same night. But... He said, “All right,” and he responded quickly. She certainly doesn't want him to be bothered over it. Right! She won't let it go too far. At that, she sees Taki-kun approaching her, and awkwardly greets him. He says good morning, and immediately brings up her email from yesterday. Crimson-faced, she stammers that she was just joking with a friend, and she made a mistake. She's sorry, so please don't worry about it! Ah, it was a mistake? Right, right! Looking a little disappointed, Taki says that he sees – so she didn't mean what she said in the email. Mio apologizes again, saying that she must really have been bothering him, but he interrupts to say that she wasn't bothering him at all. He smiles and tells her that the emoticon she attached felt like seeing her face; he enjoyed it. Mio isn't expecting that answer. He enjoyed that email? But, he tells her, he understands that it was a mistake to send it to him. Was the subject of the email [wanting him to help her study] also not true? Mio blushes harder and tells him that part was true, but it would be a bother, and she really was joking... Taki smiles widely, telling her it's no bother at all. There's only a month left this term, and if he can do a good job summarizing his notes for her, there should be no need to be anxious about the exam! (Mio tilts her head, thinking that it's this difficult conversation that she was really anxious about.) Looking away a bit, Taki goes back to the email. Mio said that she meant to send that cute email to a friend; was it for Marui-kun? Wondering why he would think that, she answers that no, it was for Shii-chan. Blushing slightly, but looking a little happy, he says, “I see.” The chapter ends with Mio thinking this situation turned out better than she expected.
