After Sumire’s confession, Hikari walks in, and Sumire dashes out. Mimi grabs Hikari, and asks him what’s going on, and says that’s a lie, right? Hikari just looks down and says ‘sorry’. Mimi asks him what he means by that, but he just keeps looking down, and she yells at him to say something. She asks him if he was lying when he said he loved her. After doing that to Sumire, then calmly telling her he loved her, it was stupid, to both her and Sumire. Yousuke then walks into the tent, and covers her mouth, and says that she can be heard from outside. The two of them leave and go to a pond. There, she asks Yousuke if Hikari and Sumire dated, and why didn’t Sumrie say anything? But Yousuke doesn’t saying anything, and Mimi wonders about his silence. The two of them come back to the camp, and a girl comes running up to them asking if they’ve seen Sumire. When they say no, she says that it’s a disaster, because Sumire had disappeared. People are gathered around discussing, and it seems that Sumire didn’t come to assemble for dinner, and the camp had been searched but she hadn’t been found, and they’re all wondering where she is. They get really worried, because it seems like she’s in the mountains, and it’s dangerous because it’s cold and you can’t see anything. Hikari is about to run off but Yousuke stops him, saying that she might come back if he waits a little more. But Hikari tells him to let go, and when he does he runs into the mountains to look for her. He runs to a clearing where Sumire is sitting on a stump. He asks her what she’s doing there, but when she sees him she runs off. She goes to the edge of a cliff, and tells Hikari not to come over. She tells him not to search for her, and return to Mimi. But then she slips and falls off the cliff, and Hikari rushes forward to catch her. It’s not that high, and both of them fall, with Hikari on the bottom. He groans, and Sumire asks him if he’s alright and if anything is broken, but then he smiles and says he’s fine, and thank goodness she’s safe. But he observes that it’s going to be hard to climb the cliff, and that if they don’t go back soon night will fall.

At this moment, the blue cat walks by them. Hikari freaks about it, and asks why it turned up here, and Sumire turns around saying that she didn’t see it. She looks a bit desperate, as she adds that she wanted to see it. She takes off after it, and Hikari chases after her and grabs her arm. They reach a stone path, and at the end of it is an old shrine. Sumire walks in, and comments that it doesn’t appear to be in use. He says that it’s better to stay in this shrine than to go looking for the path and get frozen. Sumire has some misgivings, exclaiming how it’s just the two of them until tomorrow, but Hikari walks in hands her his shirt and sits down on the floor. As they sit there, Sumire tells him if he gets cold he can come over to her. Then she corrects herself, saying that he wouldn’t touch her. She then apologises for lying about having had sex with him. Back in the tent, Yousuke is saying that it’s unlikely, but Mimi brings up the fact that Hikari apologised, and asks why he would be protecting Sumire’s lie. He says that he doesn’t know that well either. Back in the shrine, Hikari and Sumire are lying down on the floor, and she says that she’s the only one who he doesn’t touch. She asks him if he remembers that day three years ago when Mimi-chan went to Tokyo. In the flashback, Hikari goes to Sumire’s house and was complaining, and then he fell asleep. She says that was her first time seeing his weak point, and as he slept by her she was really happy. But when she leaned over to him, he rolled over. The little Sumire looks close to tears, and she says that she realised at that time, that he would never love her. So she decided that she wouldn’t show her feelings a second time to Hikari. So as not to trouble him, they remained as friends. That was her lie, and she thanks him for protecting it, then apologises for not being able to get rid of her feelings. She’s crying now, and apologises for not being able to give up. Hikari reaches out to grab her hand. The next morning, the sun’s shining brightly. Sumire’s standing in the doorway, and says that they should go back and everyone’s really worried. But then she adds that she doesn’t want to return. Today Hikari’s with her, but he’s going to leave. Back at the camp, Yousuke and Mimi are sitting in the tent, holding hands. Someone narrates that that summer she saw the blue cat, and wished that she would become happy. But then she tells Yousuke that it’s impossible to have a world where everyone becomes happy. The narration continues, saying that if someone is happy, then someone else will be hurt.

Chapter 9
The next morning people are saying that Hikari and Sumire still haven’t returned, and wondering if they’re alright. She wonders where they are, and what they’re doing, and thinks for them to return quickly. Then sensei is going to look for them, and tells everyone else to wait here but Yousuke tells him to wait. He says that a little earlier Sumire and Hikari contacted him on his phone, and says that they’re coming. He says that you might go the wrong way, so isn’t it better to wait here? The teacher listens to him. Mimi goes up to him and asks him why he lied. Since they’re in the middle of a mountain cell phones don’t work. Yousuke has faith in them, and says that the two of them are probably together, and it’s not a bad thing for those two to spend a little more time together. Meanwhile, Sumire and Hikari have been wandering around looking for the blue cat. Sumire suggests that they go back, because they’re not going to find the cat in this forest. But Hikari says that’s impossible, since she said that she wanted to make a wish on the blue cat. Then something hits Sumire on the hand and she exclaims that it hurts. She thinks it’s a stone, but Hikari picks it up and it’s an acorn. He says he thinks you can hear them falling, and they listen and they hear it. You can hear them falling like rain. He says it’s like the old days, where people tried to find the largest acorn. There’d be ‘cool hats’ and ‘ordinary hats’, and the cool ones were better. (There’s a picture with the different kinds of acorn ‘hats’, which is what they’re referring to.) Sumire laughs, and says she’s missed it. He says that when she was small, she was quite indifferent, but she often made a crying face. He’s not facing her, and adds at least that’s what he thought. It was painful. Back at the camp, Mimi and Yousuke are sitting together. Mimi says that Hikari’s protecting Sumire, like yesterday when she lied, or when he ran off to look for her. She says she’s realised that in these ten years that she doesn’t know about, Hikari and Sumire have a strong, large bond. She admits to Yousuke that she’s a little scared of Sumire.

Sumire and Hikari are still walking through the woods, and Sumire says that Hikari doesn’t look that good. He says he’s fine, it’s just that it’s been hurting from time to time. Sumire trips, and he catches her, placing his weight on his leg, and it looks painful. Sumire realises this and pulls up his pant leg to see a large scratch. She asks him why he didn’t say anything, and he says that he just twisted it a little, there was nothing to say. He says he’s fine, and that they should go, but Sumire stares at him and remembers how they fell off the cliff. He starts walking ahead, but she goes up to him and says that isn’t that from the time he fell off the cliff? She gets mad at him, and slings his arm over her shoulder saying that she’ll carry him off this mountain. They set off, and he asks her what she’s saying, what about the blue cat? She says it’s fine, but he protests that didn’t she say she wanted to see it by all means? She once again says that it’s fine. She trips a bit, and Hikari says that she’s so small, he’ll carry her. Sumire says that he doesn’t understand, he’s always been important to her. From the time they were kids, he’s been more important than her own life. She yells this last part at him, and he looks stunned. He reaches out as if to stroke her face, but then he hears a cat and runs after it. Sumire goes after him, worried about his leg, and they reach a clearing where the blue cat is sitting. Sumire starts to say something but Hikari puts a hand over her mouth so the cat doesn’t run off. Sumire says that he said as she grew up she became a crybaby, but she was always really happy. Hikari would sometimes wear a smile, and she’d be happy and her heart would pound. She was happy when he worried about her because it seemed like she was in his heart. She adds ‘isn’t that low?’ She says that she wants to wish for one thing with the blue cat, and that is soon she’ll want to give up on Hikari. Hikari reaches for her and turns her around to face him and sees that she’s crying. She asks why it’s no good, then goes up and hugs him saying that she likes him. She repeats it, then changes it to ‘I love you.’ The blue cat is watching them. Mimi’s looking at her phone, and Yousuke goes up to her and asks her what she’s doing, she can’t use her phone in the mountain. She tells him that she received a text from her ex-boyfriend, and it says ‘I can’t forget.’ She looks close to tears as she says that of course she didn’t reply, and she has confidence that she can forget about him, but she’s still uneasy. She goes up to Yousuke and says that Sumire was crying because she saw that text, she was crying for Hikari’s sake, and that she thinks that she’s no match, and that Sumire might take Hikari from her. Then there’s a narration that says a cold wind was blowing, scattering the foliage. Back at the clearing, Hikari is hugging Sumire back. The narration ends by saying that there was a premonition of separation.
