Blue [Chapter 21-22]

Chapter 21
The chapter starts with Yousuke sitting by the window talking on the phone with Mariya, asking her if they can meet that night. Mimi overhears Yousuke and gets upset for not being able to help him even though she’s the closest person to him. While Mimi is petting Youtarou-chan, (Yousuke’s dog) she sees Mariya by the entrance of the house. Mariya casually talks to her, asking where Yousuke’s room is, but Mimi stops her from entering the house and tells her to stay away from Yousuke. Mimi goes on saying that Mariya’s true lover is not Yousuke, it’s her husband and begs her to stop hurting Yousuke. Yousuke comes outside hearing what Mimi said. Mariya, not surprised at what Mimi says, tells her she came over because she noticed the sorrow in Yousuke’s voice through the phone. And with a confident smile, replies that she refuses to break up with Yousuke. Yousuke’s eyes widen, and then look down and says, “Then come with me.” As Yousuke pulls Mariya to unknown destination, Mimi starts to worry thinking that they’re going to Kakeochi. She then calls Hikari and Sumire telling them the news. All three of them gather at the seaport where Yousuke takes Mariya to. They try to stop them but Yousuke doesn’t let the three interrupt. Yousuke pulls Mariya into the boat and says, “Let’s go Mariya, this time, we’re really going leave the island and become happy.” Mariya’s eyes widen with shock (The announcer announces that the boat is about to take off).

Mariya closes her eyes tightly, and yells out “I can’t go!” Realizing what she just said, she begins to regret it. She looks up to Yousuke looking for her supposedly mistaken words. Yousuke then tells her, “See, I knew I had to go all the way to get you to say the truth. So let’s make this the end.” Everybody is shocked by what Yousuke just did and blankly stare at him. Yousuke tells her that it’s time to stop running away, for both him and her. He goes on saying that if she's lonely then she should say so, if she loves him then she say so, but not to him but to her husband, Ryu-san. "I want to find that one person to love." Mimi is moved and starts to tear up. It was what Yousuke had to do for him to end the relationship and move on. The emotional moment ended immediately when Mariya calls Yousuke stupid in a casual friendly way. “Fine! Fine! Let’s break up! I wasn’t that attached to you anyway! Go find yourself somebody else to love!” Mariya says strongly. She starts her speech, saying that it was also Yousuke’s fault. She tells him: " You find out I'm lonely and stay by my side and forgive me no matter how many times I hurt you, that's why...." She stops half way and says that it’s only going to sound like an excuse. Yousuke then hugs her tightly from behind and tells her, “I know, you really liked me. You’re an adult… why are you so wrong? Even in the end, why can’t you be honest?” Mariya unable to hide her true feelings, falls down in his arms, crying. As Mimi watches them, she notices how Yousuke looks like an adult engulfing Mariya into his arms. She also remembers what Mariya said to her long time ago, “The only thing that makes a person grow up is love.” Mariya leaves and the three friends all look at Yousuke’s back. Sumire says that she doesn’t know what to do in this kind of moment. Mimi says that she wants to hug him tightly. Hikari gets irritated and asks her if she even noticed him there. Then Hikari decides that it’s better that he hugs Yousuke instead of Mimi. So he does, and then girlishly tells Yousuke to feel better. Yousuke pulls away in disgust, and everyone starts laughing. The chapter ends with all of them hugging each other.

Chapter 22
It was the time of the year to hand in their *Shinro Kibou sheet. Sumire is planning to go to college and asks Mimi if she’s really going to become Hikari’s house wife. Mimi replies with a reluctant “Eh…” Hikari comes from behind asking her what’s up with that reaction. She sounds like she doesn’t want to really get married to Hikari. Hikari is confident in becoming a fisherman saying that if he's going to get married, he needs to make money. Yousuke plans to leave the island to go to college in Tokyo. He sees that the island isn’t everything and he wants to meet other people and get to know the world. Shinro was not only deciding your future, it was also going to separate the four friends in order for them to follow their dreams. Mimi shakes her head, not wanting to think about separating from her friends.

*During senior or junior year in high school in Japan, students are required to submit their shinro kibou sheet; which is a sheet where you write a list of what you want to do after you graduate from high school.

Mimi then changing the subject comments that today is a beautiful day and that they should all play basketball outside. She tells them that since Yousuke just had a break up and everybody is feeling down and pressured from thinking about their shinro, they should play sports to clear their minds and feel better. Mimi then wonders why Yousuke is the one leaving. He is the nicest, most reliable, and the best looking person on the island. Hikari get’s mad at Mimi for going on and on about Yousuke in front of him, her boyfriend. Then he realizes that he's very athletic and good at sports. He decides that him and Yousuke are going to have a basketball match; And if he wins, he's going to kiss Mimi in front of all the students in school, showing them that Mimi belongs to him. Mimi, against the bet, definitely doesn’t want to kiss Hikari in front of the whole school. Hikari tells her to just cheer for Yousuke since she loves him so much. Mimi gets irritated and begs Yousuke to win. The game begins and all the girls gather up to watch the popular Hikari and Yousuke play. They all drool over how good looking they are and Mimi gets distracted. But she gets herself together and starts cheering for Yousuke. Hikari gets irritated and easily steals the ball from Yousuke. Announcing that he'll never lose to him. Yousuke looks at him for a second. “I noticed that you like to drag me into everything. Is it because you think I’m going to steal Mimi from you?” Yousuke takes the ball back and tries to score but he fails. Hikari takes the ball now and the game continues. Mimi still doesn’t want to kiss him in front of the whole school but her eyes keeps following him instead of Yousuke. Yousuke tries to score again but Hikari blocks him leaving the ball on the ground. As they both go after the ball, Mimi suddenly cheers for Hikari. Hikari gets the ball and scores, marking the end of the game. Hikari won and everybody is screaming from excitement. He then pulls Mimi to the back of a storage room (I think…) and tells her that there’s no point in kissing her in front of the whole school. So he starts to kiss her on the neck and she panics from surprise. He tells her he never said he was going to kiss her on the mouth and continues. Narration: The kiss mark (hickey) is said to be marked by a guy, it’s the mark proving that “she belongs to me.” Hikari is surprised at how red the mark is, and Mimi doesn’t know what to say. It was Hikari’s first time but not it was not Mimi's first. She remembers the mark she got from Sensei when she visited him in Tokyo a while ago. (Hikari doesn’t know that Mimi went to see Sensei.) The chapter ends with Hikari asking Mimi: “Didn’t you have a similar mark on your neck a little while ago?”
